Launched on June 5, 1998, DMOZ, a popular web directory officially closed its doors on 14th March 1017. This was announced on 1st March 2017.
It was an open project directory of several search engine listings. It was maintained by a community of volunteer editors with an aim to deliver better search results across all popular search engines.
In early 2000’s Web developers/SEO specialists considered registration in DMOZ as an important SEO factor.
It lost its charm from 2104-15 and from then the site is updated infrequently with no almost no maintenance leading to closure decision. I believe a long delay in new listings is one of the biggest reason why website owners/website developers lost their interest.
Due to rapid changes in the web industry, so many historic services/websites are disappearing due to lack of visitors interests. Yahoo directory is another example. Yahoo directory was the first popular human edited search engine. Yahoo search engine and Yahoo directory ruled the industry in late 90’s and early 2000’s till google birth. Later Yahoo directory was officially announced its closure in September 2014.
